i like the correlation between ranges and boat ramps....
i shoot 30.06 touching holes at 50 yds and 1"groups at 100, with a 2.5x wweaver scope. just got a new 40, and by the time i put the 4th clip in i was getting good groups in center mass.
no matter how good or bad you are everybody should practice as much as thet can. + it's fun. I prefer to shoot at some type of object instead of paper, preferably that moves, like spinners, golf balls, fruit, anything but my tonic, that would cause a forrest fire.
On the rest 5-6 inch is great. I don't get much better with my 870 at 100 yards. It could be the scope is not tied to the barrel.
Now my wife's 20 gage Rossy, yes a Rossy, cuts paper at 50 yards with rifled slugs. That is a fun little gun.
Really I am happy with 5-6 inch groups off hand not if I am on a rest. I am better with moving targets off hand than stationary ones. I guess that's the old wing shooter in me.
I most accurate with my rifles
then it a toss up on the black powders and the Rossy
scope not being "tied to the gun" doen't sound good, maybe it's just your language again, but if the scope is MOUNTED to the gun with base and ring loose and sloppy that would account for 5-6" groups from a rest. recoil with 12 ga slugs from a bench is brutal and you wouldn't be a wuss for using a sissy pad. recoil could be a factor. try diff ammo, I think you should be able to do better. personaly I'm just not buying any more 3$/shot primo rifled slugs and my very expensive beneli sbe scoped/rifled bbl is gathering some serious dust. using the 24" smoothbore with choke tubes and very happy.
