I'd bet neither one of the people involved, the guy shooting or the woman shot, had taken the hunting safety course. It's only mandatory for anyone born on or after June 1st, 1975, so if you're over 33 1/2 years old you don't need one.
Don't know if having taken the course would have helped the situation, though. Too many things are unknown - was she wearing her orange properly, was she out of position, was the guy who shot her part of their group, or just a guy who heard a deer coming at him? Probably plenty of blame to go around, and it probably could have been avoided with proper precautions.
yeah, very unfortunate for the victim and her family and for the guy that has to live with this for the rest of his life. unimaginable.
the hunter safety course in jersey was really cool.. i dont know what they do over here in florida.. but the test was kinda hard. We actually went out in the woods and followed a blood trail and tracked a deer (fake deer) but it was realistic. Then we went to shoot at the range with out shotguns. we had to shoot a certain amount of targets to pass.. it was alot of outdoors stuff. then there was a gutting animals section.. or they call it field stripping. It was interesting..
i took an 'advanced archery' course and they did blood trailing. i think it depends on the instructor for the hunter safety course if they do this or not. when i took mine, they did not. we also didn't go over gutting or cleaning a kill. we did shoot clay pigeons and targets with a .22 and with an old recurve. for the most part though, it seemed to be very elementary. i guess they have to make it pretty easy or they would not create enough future revenue from hunting licenses and such.
my class even gave you a dvd to watch.. it was actually very imformative.. on situations like if your kill runs on to someomes private property.. and how to deal with that... it pretty much answered all the questions for NJ LAWS..
