Well I f you want to destroy it, get a couple cans of the wasp/hornet spray that sprays from like 20' away and saturate it....and run like hell from the stragglers :clap
On them hornet's we usually spray that whole nest with that wasp spray in a can that shoots about 15 feet and give it a day or two for them to clear out. Then we cut the limb that its built on and take the whole thing down. Give it a couple of coats of clear satin polyurethane and you've got a neat little piece of decor to hang in the man cave....
As far as the yellow jackets, we wait until right at dark and you can pretty much see when the activity dies down around the hole and they all fly inside, then pour just start pouring gasoline down the hole....They die ASAP......have done quite a few big nests like this up in Ga.....and it works...soon as that gas hits the hole they are done,,,,just keep pouring..
not sure if it's a myth or not (ILTH would know better) but I deal with them after dark, when they hopefully are in the nest. dressed in a makeshift bee suit, chest waders leather bomber jacket, gloves taped at wrists, full face helmet, scarf and a can of spray in each hand. have fun. I would deal with them asap so chemicals/scent can disperse and things get back to normal before season opens.
I snapped this picture last year in Ohio. I kept very clear of this. it is bigger than a basket ball.
Does any body know if they are less active in winter up north. I did not hear or see any and did not stick around to find out if any were around.
