Yep. That's just what happened to my aunt's dog. But, since she's started using the gold bond powder, they haven't had an issue. I'm sure a lot of the problem with their dog is diet and age. She's a 12 year old teacup yorkie with a pit bull attitude.
I've heard of using medicated powders too....can't think of any reason it would be harmful.
Aloe vera also is a good anti-inflammatory.
As you also said Nacho, the in-and-out of the pool coupled with the chlorine could be drying the skin out and causing the dermatitis as well.
I'm still wondering what the hell thought-process your vet is on....unless he's blaming the allergies for causing the skin infection and is just trying to keep you coming back by not figuring out the actual cause for the recurring infection....and "treating the allergies with keflex." Keflex is only effective against Gram-positive bacteria, so if it's not knocking the infection out it might call for a differently formulated antibiotic....or a combination of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive effective antibiotics.
You can keep knocking the infection out, but if the dogs keep scratching from the allergies or whatever and breaking the skin while doing so, the infection is going to keep coming back....and probably become more resilient to the antibiotics being used.
The sores could be getting infected, reason for anti-biotic. We have a dog that shed and chews bald spots on himself and is always itching. I think some dogs just have bad allergies and there aint much you can do about it.
hey SA you ever get that collar workin?
Not yet,e-mailed the company to get prices. Just aint quite sure what all I need. My boys red ryder has been getting the job done quite well though.I've had a full plate with baseball and work and everything else,if I ever get a few days of nothing to do I will get it working.
2 diff vets and both said allergies and use keflex, it works in about 10-14 days but this year is worse. the keflex is free from publx and other places, but still don't like them on it too frequently. I treat the external scabs with peroxide and betadine followed wth a triple atb oint and that heals it up quick. I'd try the powder but their in the pool so often it wouldn't stay on too long. it's the only exersise the female can get with her torn cruciate ligaments. she will go after a squirrell if I can't stop her and ends up limping badly for a few days to a week, heals up then chases another squirrel. she is a piece of work and has me wrapped, barks when she is in pain and unable to get up on the bed or furniture for me to lift her , or when it's time to express her anal glands. the male is low maint and a running fool. thanks for all the input.
