I'd check the dogs diet.

Just sprinkle a good amount of the powder on the affected areas and rub it in a bit. They won't lick it (more than once). Every dog I've used it on has learned that the hard way. But, it doesn't take more than an hour or so to notice a difference in the dogs behavior, and a week to notice a difference in sores and the smell. I don't know what's in that stuff, but it works like magic.

I've heard of using medicated powders too....can't think of any reason it would be harmful.

Aloe vera also is a good anti-inflammatory.

As you also said Nacho, the in-and-out of the pool coupled with the chlorine could be drying the skin out and causing the dermatitis as well.

I'm still wondering what the hell thought-process your vet is on....unless he's blaming the allergies for causing the skin infection and is just trying to keep you coming back by not figuring out the actual cause for the recurring infection....and "treating the allergies with keflex." Keflex is only effective against Gram-positive bacteria, so if it's not knocking the infection out it might call for a differently formulated antibiotic....or a combination of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive effective antibiotics.

You can keep knocking the infection out, but if the dogs keep scratching from the allergies or whatever and breaking the skin while doing so, the infection is going to keep coming back....and probably become more resilient to the antibiotics being used.

A while back a couple of members mentioned some meds that were good for dog allergies and insect bites etc. my britts are constantly getting bitten up and developing scabs, several concentrated in certain areas. the vet says its allergies and puts them on keflex antibiotic, but their on it at least 1/2 the time.somethings gotta work better. I use the heartguard chew tabs and flea and tick liquid, missing link vitamin supplement, glucosamine condroitin and fish oil liquid allready. they are in the pool at least 10-12 x a day I'm sure the chlorine isn't helping. any sugestions?

Just curious, what kind of dog food are you feeding and why all the additives?
