wanting to teach my black lab to blood trail. Have trained bird dogs, but no experience with blood trailing. Good blood trailer is worth its weight in gold in Georgia. Them guys get good money to find shot deer. any insight would be greatly appreciated.
is it just blood the smell. If I train him with hogs. have access to them. will he be able to blood trail a deer?? been looking on-line. googled it, but all i'm getting is trainers and finished dogs for sale.
Wish I could help, I've never trained a dog to blood trail.
I'm sure someone on here can Help..
When I used to dog hunt, we would always use our cold nose trail dog on a lead to find shot deer. They were my cousins dogs so I can't really tell you much on the training.
I know that I used him several times personally and he always went right to the deer.
Now there is a guy in my lease that has a beautiful bloodhound. Apparently he paid a bunch of money for this dog and his whole line is famous. He is training him to trail . What he did is saved several pieces of deer hide from last season and put them in the freezer. About 1-2 times a week he takes a piece out, ties a rope to it and drags it around his property. He hides it and he said the dog has found it every single time. He keeps expanding the range and waiting a litle longer to put the dog on it, and he has got it every time.
Dont know if that helps any.
Also, I remember my old man telling me about training bird dogs. He would tie a quail wing to a cane pole and drag it across the field in a jeep, then turn the dog on it
i've used the quail wing trick on bird dogs. gonna take him with me this week sometime and shoot a hog . get some of the blood i guess. I am really wondering if I train him for blood. will he trail deer and hogs. I'm gonna start on it. If anyone can tell me please let me know.
