30.06, I was using the 295 gr. copper series hollow point Powerbelts with 100 grs. of American Pioneer powder. May have been just on of those things that happened,(human error, a bad bullet, bad shot placement, etc.), but I ain't going to use 'em again. Back to the XTP 240gr.hp bullet. Washington County is located in LA. Been calling this farm home for 38 years. 38 years ago it was unusual to see a deer track on this place and now they are just a click away from being called a pest! Since last Sunday night they have cleaned out a pea patch that was ready for picking. The only consolation is that they will be here when the season finally opens and then we will complete the transaction-the trade of zipper cream peas for venison.

You must know of the Nelson's then. The woods are full of them up that way. My family has been in that area around Chipley Florida since before the War of Northern Agression. My GR-Gr-Gr-Grandfather John Nelson (aka Jens Nissen) fought with the Florida Home Guards and was captured by the Union troops after the Battle of Mariana and taken to Elmira Prison in NY until the war was over. He survived fortunately or else I wouldn't be here telling this story :>) I hunt just north of DeFuniak Springs right on the Alabama border. Love it up there. If I had a way to, I'd move my family up that way in a heart beat. The Lord has other plans for me now though down here in Tampa.

9dawgs you are right, the woods are full of Nelsons! In fact one of the younger generation built a house on a piece of property that is on our north line. He's a good kid, has a wife and a couple of young children and a full time job. A lot of the old timers are gone, Rex who was a big watermelon farmer, his brother Farrell who was also a big farmer and a local politician have gone to meet their just reward. I think they have a Cousin's Reunion every year in Chipley. There was a Byron Nelson who served as pastor of our church back in 1951-'52. Treefarmer

Yes, I met Farrell when I taught up there at New Orange Baptist Church a couple of years ago. My Grandpa JT Nelson built that church back in the 50's when the church they were using over on the Peel property burnt down. John Nelson is burried at the Peel Cemetary. I think Farrell is behind the New Orange Church. The fella who's pastoring there Alcus Brock is a cousin of mine. Good people.

They just had the reunion last month.

That Chipley/Marianna/Blountstown/Wewahitchka area is where a lot of my family came from. Varnums, Mercers, McClellans are some I know of for sure. Granny talked about growing up in the piney woods, her daddy working the turpentine mills, etc. One of my cousins, Troy Varnum, is either preaching or head of one of the Baptist associations up near Panama City.
