Anyone hunt tide swamp?
If so were you succesful. I found some articles saying it produces alot of decent size bucks since its 3 point minimum.
Thinking about heading over there opening weekend.
Any input is appreciated!
I hunted TS for many many years. We used to hunt it back in the 80's, and I killed more game in there than any other place I have hunted. Not sure why I really quit hunting it, just started doing th lease thing and got away from it. It is a tough hunt though. Be prepared to log some miles on your Nike's. They sorta made it a quasi park several years ago and closed all the "side roads" off. Put lime rock down on all the roads, added bat boxes, nature observation points, etc... So what we used to drive down, you have to hoof it. They did have all of the side roads planted in food plots. Not sure about now though. Where they screwed up years back is allowing doe harvest during archery, with no cap on the ##. It decimated the deer population. They went to antler restrictions a few years back. I know 2 guys who hunt it religiously and they both told me they are seeing more quality bucks now. Not sure about the hog population. I talked to the gal(owner of Skully'z bbq joint in steinhatchee, who also runs the check station) and she told methat the 1st three weeks of archery, theer had been 2 hogs and three deer checked out. Now I know a guy whose nephews hunt there and they have no issue killing hogs. Can't tell you any more than that.
If I was gonna go, I would go to Salt creek rd. Walk 2/3 of the way down and there will be a huge oak hammock on your left. You will need to cut thru pines to get to it. That hammock used to be a hot spot for me and dad back in the day. Take a GPS, you can get turned around quick in there
Thanks for the heads up. Looking forward to checking it out!
I think i am gonna drive over their this weekend and scout it out just to see how things look and if its worth going in opening morning.
My downfall is since I recently moved down from WA I dont have a stand. I have never used one, its always been spot and stalk or long open range. I am gonna try to get something figured it this weel. I originally was gonna pass up this season and get a lease next year.
But my brother just Killed a Booner Black tail up in WA and my uncle A Booner Muley. I got the fever and cant wait till next year!
Yeah man don't pass up the season if you can avoid it. Keep checking craigslist every day for climbers. They are usually some for sale just about every day. Or if you can afford a new one, get a Summitt Viper. If you can't spring that much$$, Dick's sporting goods sells some decent climbers for under $100. All mine are scattered out thru the woods now or I would loan one out
