This was my first ever public land hunt and first, doing it alone, hunt. Scouted yesterday and found 3 areas of routed up land that seemed to be several days to a week old. Didn't see much else. I decided to hunt one of the areas this afternoon. The area was a big area that was under an oak tree that was dug up pretty good. There were new acorns that had dropped on the old sign.

I got in around 3:30 and sat about 75 yards down from the area on a chair about 2 feet off the trail. Sat until 6:30, about 20 minutes before dark. Didn't see or hear anything. Can't get out in the morning but will head back out tomorrow afternoon. Not sure if I should go to the same spot (because of the newly dropped acorns) or try another.

I totally "newbbed" (newbie) out today though. I forgot my flashlight...so I couldn't hunt til dark. I forgot a rope to drag anything out the 30 minute walk to my car...that would have been rough had I got something. I left my snacks and water in my car. Had 2 coolers in my car but didn't buy ice. And a few other stupid mistakes. I was embarrassed for myself. I guess I need to make a checklist for future hunts. Any links to printable checklists would be appreciated.

Hope all is going well with everyone else.

For you first solo it sounds like you learned alot. Soon all that will be second nature and you will be putting meat in the cooler.

sounds like you learned alot on your hunt. it will all work out and will be second nature. when i hunt, i try to go as light as possible. if it doesn't fit in my backpack i don't take it. wait till you start chasing deer during the rut. rattle horns, grunt tube, drag rags, scent, and all the other stuff. lol. chalk it up as lesson learned and you will not forget that stuff next time. good luck.
