Green Swamp WMA Camping Permit Revisions
Hwy 471 Campground for 2011-12
Total Licensing System (TLS) Permits:
Campers may continue to apply for and obtain camping permits through the same TLS process as last year, but fewer sites will be “reserved” for TLS permits. Sites 1-39 will be available for TLS permits. TLS permit holders also will have the option of returning their permit at anytime during a season at a drop box located in the campground (permit should be signed and dated prior to depositing). By returning a TLS permit, the permit holder will be relieved of any future responsibility for the site. Returned permits will become available for other campers using the “on-site” process described below. All other aspects of the TLS camping permit will remain the same as last year (permit is not transferable, permit is valid until the last day of the particular season, permit holder is responsible for the site, any number of campers allowed on the site, etc.) Except for reducing the total number of sites and the option to return permits, a person who utilized a TLS permit in the past will have the same experience this year.
On-site Registration/Permit Issuance Process:
All the remaining sites (44 in total) will be available to campers through a first-come, first-served, registration process at the campground. Five of the sites will be designated for “short term” camping and the others will be available for the entire season (same as a TLS permit).
A self-service camping kiosk will be located at the campground. The camping kiosk will consist of a status board (which indicates site availability), self-service registration/permit cards, and a secured drop box.
Prior to occupying a campsite, campers will need to visit the kiosk, review the status board and determine which site they would like. Then the camper will complete a registration/permit card. The top portion of the card will be deposited in the drop box and the bottom portion of the card will be retained by the camper and displayed as the camping permit on their camping equipment. Only one person per campsite needs to complete a registration card.
Campers may begin registering for campsites as soon as the campground is opened for camping.
Archery - 8 a.m. Oct. 14, 2011 General Gun - 8 a.m. Nov. 18, 2011
Small Game - 4 p.m. Jan. 20, 2012 Spring Turkey - 8 a.m. Mar. 16, 2012
To prevent parking and traffic concerns along Hwy. 471, 24 hours prior to the campground opening, campers will be allowed to enter the area at a secondary entrance and “lineup” along Quarry Road.
Long Term First-come, First-served sites (FCFS):
Permits for these sites will be valid from the day of issuance until the last day of the particular season. All camping equipment must be removed on the last day of the particular season. Once a person obtains a permit for a site, they must “occupy” that site (some type of camping device on the site) otherwise the site remain available for other campers. A FCFS permit holder may return their permit at anytime by depositing it in the drop box. The permit holder will be relieved of future responsibility for the site and the site will become available for another camper. Permits returned for TLS sites will be made available as a FCFS site.
See attached map for site locations: 39 sites at 471 (sites 40-78).
Short Term First-come, First-served sites (FCFS-ST):
These permits are intended for weekend or short term camping.
Archery season - permits valid until the Sunday following issuance (2-3 nights)
General gun season - permits valid for one week following issuance
Small game season - permits valid until the Sunday following issuance (2 nights)
Spring turkey season - permits valid for one week following issuance
Camping equipment must be removed or relocated to a FCFS site by the last day of the “short term” period. FCFS-ST permit holders may return their permit at anytime by depositing it in the drop box. The permit holder will be relieved of future responsibility for the site and the site will become available for another camper.
