Was up in Illinois for the opening week of turkey season on a property we hunt every year and it is covered up with birds. My good friend Dempsey and I got onto the farm just after sunrise, running late I knew it would be a bad day and I was wrong. Soon as we got out of his van we heard them gobbling like crazy and split up to search after some birds. I hustled down into the draws and got as close as I dared, which was good enough. I saw about 15 minutes and had a nice big tom walk out of range and waited as gobbling contiued below me in the draw and 3 birds walked up. I managed to take one out by 7:45 am and headed for the van to drop it off and search to fill another of my 3 tags. I started down an old wood cutting lane that is kept open for deer travel lanes and soon had some birds gobbling below me as I meandered the ridge top. I quickly found a good tree and started my seductive talk with the birds. Roughly 20 minutes later a nice tom and jake crested the hill in search of the hen, only she did not exist. First shot dropped the tom and with a pull of the finger and slight movement of the barrel the jake hit the dirt. Three birds down by 9:00 am and I was ready to head for home. Dempsey had his good morning as well as he hit a different area of the farm and downed 2 birds himself.
Dempseys' birds.
nice goin
Now that's a hell of a day in the turkey woods right there. Congrats! :toast
thats a nice limit. 3 per day! how many per season? I love hunting farm land they always seem to hold alot of game.
The season limit is 3 in the spring and I managed to get lucky, very lucky. We love this patch of earth in Southern Illinois to turkey and deer hunt. Full of game and every trip out we get to see deer along with occassional turkeys and bobcats in the fall.
