I am headed out to Aucilla next Saturday to take my Dad hunting for the first time. I have not hunted Aucilla for turkey before, so I am not sure where to start. I have hunted the area in the past during gun and small game, so I am somewhat familiar with it.. I would like to take him where I usually hunt, but scheduling constrictions dictate that we hunt east of Tallahassee. Since it is Dad's first hunt, I would love for him so see some action. I don't expect anyone to tell me where their sweet spot is, but any advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated, as it is a very large area.
Thanks, in advance.
I don't know any places in there but there's a good population of turkeys in there I've heard.
That's what I hear. I am familiar with the area, in general, I just need to know where to start for turkey hunting (the Aucilla River sinks, the Pinhook River area, Western Sloughs, the north end, etc.).
I used to hunt right across the road from Aucilla, on hwy 59. Our camp was right across from aucilla gate 17. We had a ton of birds on that property. If you are familiar with the area and know the Hwy 59/98 area...there is a pond on west side of 59 about 3/4 mile before the end of it. I had a stand on the back of that pond and heard turkeys gobbling directly across the hwy from there. Of course that's been several years now
That is excellent. I am familiar with that area. Thank you.
