I can't say enough about Tiger Island Outfitters. For a total rookie experience, it was great. My buddy and I went there hoping for a good first hunting experience and we got just that. Arriving there took a while and we opted for the afternoon hunt. I finally got to use my Mossberg 500 with the red dot. I still had a couple of misses but I need to work on trajectory when at an angle. Once I got rid of the angle issue.... It was deadly accurate.
The weather was great for a first trip. We were looking not only to find out what hog prints, sign and scat looked like but also how to process a hog. I wont harvest unless I know how to handle the animal. We learned a TON and I am glad we went. Both of us processed our own hogs and it was not that bad.
My first harvest was a 122 pound sow. My friends was a 149 pound boar. The excitement of stalking was great. This is something I definitely will be doing again. For me, hunting adds a whole different dimension to a hike and outdoor exercise. What a great way to be outdoors more! I hope to start scouting local areas soon. I want to possibly have one more hunt with someone so I can be sure to process the animal correctly, before venturing out on my own.
Processing the hog was an interesting experience. Boars have unique issues verses a Sow. I will admit, when we started the boar, I was not enamored with some of the activities. That being said, we made it through it and got the cuts of meat. Right now the meat is cooling on ice / draining and will remain that was for 3 days. With the great job the guide did in butchering, I am not even sure I will be going to a butcher.
Two more hunting fans have joined the crowd. I am looking forward to posting more reports and hopefully being able to get out there with you folks.
