IMO....12 Gauge 30" Full Choke...#1 Buck
Any shotgun, 20 gauge or larger will do the job.....at REASONABLE ranges. I prefer the 12 gauge. Personally I do not like the single shots for a couple reasons.
1. No backup shot...hunting hogs close can be dangerous, they are known to be aggressive and are certainly capable of charging.
2. External Hammers...not the safest mechanisms in my book. When you uncock it and go to let the hammer down, make sure that you are pointing the muzzle in a safe direction.
However, its all in your presonal preference and experience. Go with the action that you are most comfortable with.
I'm not a big shotgunner. But I do have one. I think everyone should have one just in case an opportunity arises. You never know...this hunt you go on might turn out to be a yearly thing. Or you could be asked again. Or something else might come up.
I'd get a pump instead of a single. Just more usable. As mentioned here, you get some decent ones for $200 - $300. Heck, there's nice turkey gun, camo and all, at wal-mart right now for $350 that I've been eying. Again, I'm not really into shotguns but you'll get some use out of it over the years.
Thanks for all the comments they were great, I forgot to say , i am use to a single shot , I use a T/C prohunter M/L and have a 308 barrel which i us for Deer, seeing as i am unemployeed right now and money is tight (i wish i could afford a 12 ga barrel for the T/C) I just got a single shot 20 gage H&R it is old but in Great shape, I probably will only use it once or twice a year, i use the above T/c for deer and hog and also my favorate 44 mag pistol
if you've already got the 20 ga single shot use that and carry the 44 mag for back up, if legal wherever you may be hunting
