Well told story, bet you keep your bulldog a little closer from now on. I learned my lesson on a long, cold night in the swamp that one must have a "sure enough" catch dog on hand if ones intent is to catch hogs. I was still in junior high and a couple friends had spotted some hogs in a neighboring pasture we had permission to hunt so we set off with my only trail dog at the time and a buddies bulldog that would supposedly catch anything that walked. Of course nobody present had ever witnessed this dog in action but being young and eager and dumb with dreams of hog huinting grandeur in my head we went anyway. Ol Goober, at the time a young buck, was in his prime ( before the second broken leg and the repositioning of most of his innards) and took the track pretty quickly. The hog took Goober all the way across the small ranch into a cypress dome. Inside this particular dome was an island, if you will, of briars and brambles. The hog came bay right in the middle and we could hear him fighting so we knew it was thick enough for goober to have to get close. My accomplice released his "catch" dog on my cue and the dog sailed into the brush. I went in close behind him so I heard the collision promptly followed by squalling and brush cracking. At a dead run the buuldog came past me, mind you Im running towards the bay. Too late to stop I saw 250 pounds of black in front of me, with a leap a bull fighter would be proud of I completely cleared the hog and got out of the way. After realizing the other boy and dog were gonna be no help I hissed Goober on the boar and tryed to leg him. The hog trounced my loyal partner and broke bay to run 50 yards or so only to be stopped by a well timed tag to the nutsack from the dog. Long story short this went on for two hours until Goober and I managed to time it right and leg the hog. Being exhausted and Goober steady bleeding I decided to knife the pig and head for the truck. On the way I passed the other boy and told him to start dragging. Ever since then if there isnt a proven bulldog in the box my other most loyal partner comes along... a .22 magnum revolver. A good catch dog prevents trail and bay dogs from getting cut down. While dog piling works on some hogs there are a few old hands out there that have seen that film before as you very well know now.
Great story, give em hail,
Podunk
Very cool! :eek
Great hunt and your gift for the telling of it I found awesome. Felt as though as I was right there with you. Nice hog
Yep, a good story worthy of the pages of Fur Fish and Game magazine. Nice looking dogs too, I never dog hunted so it was a good insight at the whole procedure. Well done. :toast
