went to cirus sat afternoon, drove around stagecoach and saw no other cars, so went down 11b towards stage pond, had the place to myself for an hour or so. carried my 22mag rifle for squirrel or small hog if lucky ( and as always my sig 220 ). strolled around the pond slowly awhile letting things quiet down and picked a spot near some game trails and set up about 6 of my stink corn scented rags ( up off the ground so no pigs could reach them) and after about 15-20 min began to hear hogs from out in the pond area and in the woods begin to start coming closer. just then I hear a large group of hikers from the far side of the pond ( thats how freakin loud they were) working there way in my direction. they were yelling and shouting the entire time and I could hear everyword they said. they came right to where i was and started yelling to me from about 50 yds away how ya doin , what are you hunting for? ( probly 6 adults and 10 kids or so ) so I told them nothing anymore since all that noise you've been making has surely scared anything away and that I've been able to hear them since they arrived and if they ever wanted to see any wildlife would need to be quiet.well they appologised and went on there way but it was now almost 6 pm it got quiter again finaly and i could just begin the hear the hogs again starting to come in but by then it was just too dark to shoot. but a nice area with some giant old oaks and alot of hiking and drivable trails. such is public land. still beats doin the honeydo list.
guess you will be hitting that spot again soon
It's a real nice spot, but theres alot of other areas there I wanna check out, maybe just avoid that area on weekends. I feel you realy need to know the area you hunt like the back of your hand to be most efficient/effective for game taken vs time spent hunting. and that could take along time for a large area. thats why I like the smaller wma's. with the limited time I get to go out ( usualy just about 4 hour stretches am or pm) it's hard to get to know an area well.
I wouldnt consider Citrus one of the smaller WMAs lol its just over 40,000 acres. But as you said knowing the area your hunting like the back of your hand really helps out.
