Well, bad news this morning. My nephew and I walked in at first gray light, and the herd of hogs were in the field already. We had the wind in our face, and stalked up to about 40 yards of them.
I got down on one knee, had him sit on the ground behind me and rest the rifle barrel on my leg. I cocked the gun, pushed the safety off, and told him to put it on the biggest hogs shoulder and squeeze the trigger.
Well he did, just that, and knocked the hog off its feet. It got up and plowed dirt on its chest squealing and headed into the tree line. I could hear it a pretty good ways in the woods.
We went ahead and got in the stand and sat for an hour
At 8, we started trailing. I had good blood for about 100 yards, then the blood just faded out. I was only able to find one more spec of blood. I called my boy Skunkape(his lease is across the hwy from me) and he brought his ole trusty trail dog over. She got right on the blood trail and drug us into a briar thicket. Unfortunately, there had been so many hogs thru there we have no idea if she stayed on the correct hog. We gave up after about 30 minutes.
No hog for my nephew, but he fully understood what happened and accepted the fact that you can't win them all. That's 2 kids I took hunting this week. The smile on their faces wa better than any animal I have killed
