Way back when I used to work for my father's construction company, our agreed on policy was if in doubt about the plans or instructions, ask for clarification before even starting and get an ageed upon solution in writing. Doesn't have to be fancy, just a short note written directly on th back of the plans will suffice and have the client sign the agreement. It eliminates problems and will normally also eliminate re-work.
But, the client also should have spoken up immediately if they didn't think the project was being done properly.
Bad situation all around. Sucks when you have to tear it down and start over.
That's why I too always make sure to get the homeowner to sign off before I start. And, when installing fences, I always "string" them off and have the homeowner verify before I dig a single hole. Then, if they think it's in the wrong place after I'm done, I agree to move it with a back charge for all labor. Have only had one homeowner try to push it, and all it took was showing the contract.
My brother and I used to deliver appliances for ***** as independents- paid by the delivery, not the time it took. One delivery was to a doctor's house. So we get there, start unpacking the fridge and taking off the doors to fit inside the house. The whole time, the doctor's standing, watching us. We get the fridge inside, hook up the icemaker, etc.. THEN he says, "you guys know this is supposed to be white, not beige, right???"
I called dispatch and warned the to NOT assign us to make the re-delivery!!!
