I don't recall, I was wearing gloves. Maybe thats it. If it doesn't get hot its not lit?

There is a little sight window on the top to look thru to see if its actually lit or not. If it is lit the grate will be hot to the touch. even with gloves you would feel it

Crock had a good tip, light it before you head out and let it get good and warmed up.
