I just sold my S&W 1911 pistol, on Gunbroker.com I know they are a pretty reputable site. The winning bidder lives in Sarasota, just south of me. He sent me an email asking if we could do a face-to-face meet and cash swap. I told him if he had a valid CCW I would not have a problem with the swap. otherwise I would rather go thru the FFL.
I know Florida law allows a private person to sell to another private person providing the buyer is not a felon. But how am I supposed to know this? Is there a way I can initate a background check on the buyer before the sale, just for peice of mind? I certainly do not want to know that the person I sold to was a felon, AFTER THE FACT.

Make up a basic bill of sale and get his Dl #. Each of you sign it. You will be in the clear regardless
Take him to a gun shop and pay the 5 or 8 for a background check
If he says no
Tell him within the Gunbroker rule it has to be sent to FFL
and your being nice enough to do it a bit different
If he says no
Tell him you'll take it to a gun shop and he could pay the full transfer
Well believe it or not, the fellow replyied and said he is a Deputy Sherriff of Sarasota county. I told him that a Valid Sherriffs ID would be enough proof LOL.
I will of course get a signed Bill of Sale anyways, but I think the background check is not nessesary now 🙂
But thanks on the info of going to a gun store to do the transaction. I could have just went with the FFL dealer to do the check.
But you understand even though I knew my butt would be protected with a bill of sale, I sure don't want the thought that I could have sold my firearm to a felon. And now I will have a clear conscience. I am not saying that they florida law should change, but I think a process where a private person could get a BG check done before selling his firearm to a stranger would be a good idea.

with lots of people :toast
