The Knight Trail range is where the Sarasota Sheriff Dept. and other local LEOs go to do their quals. I found it a great place to sight in my blackpowder and .243, and also shoot my .45 auto. You have to use paper targets set in frames, so it ain't as much fun as plinking cans or bottles, but it's great for getting on target.
I don't know if they have any comps on the range itself. I know they have a skeet/trap club that holds comps for those types of shooting. Out on SR39 south of Pinecrest the Hillsborough Sheriff Dept. has a range, and I was told they used to have a combat course and double-tap range that was used for some sanctioned competitions. I have no idea if they still do that or not. The Manatee gun club out on SR64 may also have something like that.
Whenever I want to go shooting, I miss living out west. You could just drive off the road out into the desert, find a nice backstop and blast away! We used to be able to do that in some of the old phosphate pits south of Lakeland and Bartow, but as far as I know those are all closed off or built over these days.
knights trail has tourneys for trap and skeet, registered shoots. my wife and i go shooting there sometimes. they are sticklers for rules, and the oldtimers will definately bust your balls and get up in your shizz if you arent following the safety rules, but its still fun. you can rent a cart or this time of year walking is nice, for sporting clays. you and your shooting partner pull for eachother. they have 5 stand, skeet, trap and sporting clays. i have never shot the rifle or hand gun range, i think its only 100 yards though. they manatee gun and archery club has up to 1000 yard shots. they also have some shotgunning and pistol ranges. its not a bad place to shoot. just far out for me.
