Way easier to learn on stick than on Mig but probably better to try start out with Mig. I can do almost anything on stick and have for years just change rod size and material (plain steel to stainless) but my son can do almost anything on the Mig except burn. I try to get
him to do it now or else I drag out the stick since I don't have to relearn it every time I drag it out.

Not a welder by trade but have used some. Stick or mig will get it done but like Dave said the 170 . Would be a better unit for 90 more dollars. You can turn bigger welder down but not the other way around. At 20 % duty cycle weld 2 minutes let rest 8 minutes I think how it goes. Been looking at welders myself everybody says by biggest and best you can afford

I'll take the ole buzz box for a starter welder for the simple reason you don't have to buy the bottle of gas. Wire will last longer than a rod and with a stick welder you will have to chip the flux off but it is just not as hard to learn.
