Alot of that depends on where you work. I dont work for the state, I work at the pinellas county jail. We bid every 6 months for shift, division and vacation. We house over 3000 inmates and have a full hospital. It is a good career but you will not get rich. If you are not sponsored by an agency for the acadamy look into all the agencies for employment. Talk to several o get the real story about the agency one will say "it is the best agency in the world" and the next will say "This place sucks" you have to read people. get on leoaffairs.com read the forums for agencies in your area. there is a lot of bs on there but you can get a feel for places. good luck
are there better benefits with state jobs, or no?
in this economy benefits and job security are more important than salary imo. if you can get into a profession early and get your 20 and a pension by 40-42 years old you still have time for a 2nd career and 2nd pension that no matter what happens you will get a check every month and be able to enjoy your "golden years", wish I had taken my own advice. looks like I'll be working until 90 to pay off this mortgage.
I dont know about the states benefits I think they are about the same. I know when I started I was making allmost what my freind with 8 years in with the state was. Every county is different as far as pay. Now vacation ans sick time are great here. I took vacation for 26 days in febuary and now I am gonna have off the next 9 and still have allmost 200hrs of time on the books. I allso have 300+ hrs of sick time. Now I dont tipically waste time esspecailly sick you never know when you will need it.
