Alot of that depends on where you work. I dont work for the state, I work at the pinellas county jail. We bid every 6 months for shift, division and vacation. We house over 3000 inmates and have a full hospital. It is a good career but you will not get rich. If you are not sponsored by an agency for the acadamy look into all the agencies for employment. Talk to several o get the real story about the agency one will say "it is the best agency in the world" and the next will say "This place sucks" you have to read people. get on leoaffairs.com read the forums for agencies in your area. there is a lot of bs on there but you can get a feel for places. good luck

I was a C,O in Polk CI for a few years,
I got sponsored by the state they paid for everything.
I worked on the compond for 2 mo before I went to school.
I went back in the ARMY after 2 years of that.
My Dad worked at Volusia C,S,O for 15 years and now workes for HCSO for 20 years he started in corrections.
Me I like Blowing crap up and doing my own thing.
I spent 13 years in service I have a hard time being locked up all day.

I am 39 with 2 kids and love it.
But as a young man like you I would get my 20 under my belt in the Army or Air Force and then go get a LEO job.
