Mom is hanging tough. She's by far a tough old woman. Not sure I wouldn't have given up by now. Unfortunately, we have not made much progress int he almost 4 weeks she has been in the hospital. Of course the fact she is still alive is actually progress, because the medical staff has had her buried about three different times now. The week of Thanksgiving, we were told to call family in that wanted to see her and start making final arrangements. She defied the odds...
There have been a couple times she has told me flat out she wanted to die and get out of her misery. I told her daddy would be pissed off at her for talking like that if she gets to heaven and has to face him again. dad never gave up on anything. I gave her the choice a week ago to either let go and go be with dad, or fight this shhittt and get better
They told us that she is more than likely going to need surgery to survive. This bacteria infection has permanently damaged her colon, and it is past the point where it will repair itself. She has been passing blood for several days, and has been receiving transfusions. She has even been taking pain meds(which she said she would never do)
At this point, her colon is so damaged, they can't do a colonoscopy to examine, as the procedure itself could cause an unstoppable bleed
When they do surgery, they may have to remove some, all, or none of her colon. She will more than likely be on a bag the rest of her life, and will have eating/drinking changes
A few days ago I pulled up a chair next to her bed and told her what the drs had told me. Basically told her she would die without surgery. Pretty much the hardest conversation Ive ever had to make in my 38 years. She and I had a good cry together, and she told me she was scared to death. I told her I was just as scared as she was, just didn't have the pain she did. She told me then she didn't want to die, she had too many grand kids to see..And told me to get the surgery set up and rolling.
Looks like it is going to be on Tuesday this week. I will keep yall updated as I get any news myself. If she makes it thru this, she still has a long road pysically. She has been on a TPN drip and no food for 5 weeks now, so she is suffering nutritionally. ALso, she was about crippled before this illness and is refusing any therapy so its gonna be an all around battle for the long haul here
