While he might not have liked you stealing his spot, he didn't mind the clicking noise...
You know, since snakes are deaf and all...

Got me there, I did not think about that, based on him only rattling when we cranked the winch perhaps it was the vibrations traveling down the tree into the ground. As soon as we stopped, he stopped. When we started back up so did he. He was right at the base of the tree wrapped around a small palm??

Snakes are not deaf. They have no outer ear but have an inner ear and pick up on vibrations just fine and all.

Picking up vibrations through the ground is entirely different than "hearing" airborne sounds.
Even the studies that show that some species of snakes pick up vibrations through their jaw and skull require transmission through either direct touch or a source within a distance of only cm.

It's funny. I have a living room full of pet snakes. I can walk in and out of this room 50 times a day and you never see one of them, as they stay in their hides. I can walk in here with a plastic container of rats, and within a minute all of them will start peeking out

You must be right, it has nothing to do with them smelling the rats, though they can do that from yards away.
Heck, even the anaconda and sea snake who can smell prey UNDER WATER, are probably just listening to fishermen on the VHF.
