If you don't pass the stone, you will get a UTI. Almost guarantee you you'll get one.

What does actually cause the stone to form in the first place?

I believe stones are calcium.
I guess you get stones if you have excessive calcium from food/drinks or if your body doesn't flush out calcium as fast as others.

I've also heard that drinking a lot of iced tea also contributes to them. I'm pretty sure that's what caused my FIL's stones.

I haven't had a glass of tea since my stone and I use to drink it daily.

Hey crock- I tell u what helped mine, I drank enough beer to catch a buzz and peed a lot. It did seem to ease the pain. I still couldn't stand straight up though.
