I maintained Aids to Navigation for over 10 years while in the Coast Guard. I sure do miss it!!! I sure wished I could help you out

I dunno how you guys used to do it...but I watched the USCG outta Ft. Myers Beach go change the batteries in a bunch of them and just drop the old battery straight in the water! There are a pile of toxic batteries at the bottom of every lighted marker around that area. :pinch

That was the old days....now there is tracking records for EVERY single battery out there. There are times when an aid gets knocked down and the battery gets lost, but they still search for it for hours before declaring it lost.
As far as the batteries that were dumped back then, the USCG spent a TON of money cleaning up around each and every aid.
