When Andrew came through here I wasn't even close to being prepared. I rode it out in a house that was destroyed. Just be prepared to take care of yourself for at least a few weeks. It was like the Wild West down here. Hopefully you will never have to deal with what we went through.
Enough gas and oil for the generator for a few weeks of run time. Remember the gas stations may not be up and running right away. You can always put it in your truck when the season ends.
Cash is king. If the power is out for a while most banks will be closed also.
Propane tanks. I keep 2 and rotate as I use them all the time. If a storm is coming I make sure they are both full.
Lots of drinking water. I usually buy 4 or 5 cases at the beginning of each season and use them after the season.
Fill your meds when a storm is within 4 days just in case.
We always have too much food in the house so I don't do anything for that.
At the beginning of each season I have my generator serviced. Remember that those guys will be backed up with work and if your generator goes it will be there for a month and you'll be without.
Chainsaw is always a good idea to have ready.
I always get a couple cartons of cigs right before a storm.
Plenty of booze.
Flash lights and radio to use during the storm. Your not gonna be able to use the generator till the storm is gone.
Plenty of batteries.
When a storm is gonna hit I unplug everything to keep from getting hit with power surges.
I also put all of my important papers in a waterproof bag just in case.
Tire plugs and a small compressor in the truck. After Andrew I had at least a dozen flats in 3 weeks.
I'm sure there is more but that's the bulk of it. If you prep ahead of time then a storm warning shouldn't be a pain. The only thing I usually have to do is put up the shutters and bring everything indoors. There's nothing worse than the pure panic when a storm is coming.Just remember that CASH IS KING!!!
All good pointers need to make a topic page with updates and member response area so if it happens ppl could post there progress.Or even if extra assistance is needed....etc

If there are things you want to save from flooding, but can't take them with you, stick them in the dishwasher and latch it shut. It makes a nice little waterproof compartment, unless the whole house gets blown away!
