I'm in the market for a new deer/hog gun, whats your guys's opinion? techniquly you can use something as small as the 17hmr but only shoots like a 20gr bullet. I like the 22. hornet but it only shoots like a 35 gr bullet. I just don't think i need something big like a 300, or 270. i like those guns but i'm not trying to elk hunt, a good buck in florida will only weigh 135- 150. Does anybody know anything about the 22.250? or maybe something like 243. what do you guys think?

If those were my choices, I would go with the 243. Ammo is readily available anywhere you go. Me personally, I am just not into those little tiny bullets in those other calibers. Some guys shoot 22-250 and 223, but you have absoultely no margin for error
I got a 243 this past summer. Killed a hog with it and it never twitched. There is n recoil to it either

do you have a preference for action type auto, bolt, lever? is it to be scoped or open sights? how much recoil can you handle comfortably without affecting accuracy? do you want to go small light and fast or larger and steadier? and how much are you looking to spend. me, I want it all small light fast accurate good stopping power, mild to moderate recoil. I like short action ultralight carbines like a 7mm08, or 308 caliber, scoped with a low power variable like 1x4, 1.5x5, 2x7 with a heavy duplex , or an open sighted lever action in 3030, 35 ,375. a full sized 30-06 is a little heavier in weight and recoil but you could hunt anything on this continent.there are alot of good used guns being sold now, due to hard times, check the newspapers and don't go too light or too heavy on the caliber. go with what is right for you. good luck and let us know what you choose

i would go with the .25-06, .243, .270 win or short mag, .30-06, .308. you can get ammo at walmart for all of them but the .25-06 or at least not at any of the ones around me. i wouldn't hunt too much deer with a .22 hornet, not that it wont kill them but shot placement is extremely crucial.

It's whatever suits you Nacho.I shoot a .358(BTW,I finally got somebody to reload me a bunch of ammo). If your sitting in a stand and have long shots over 100 yards go with a .270 ,30-06 or something like that. If you like slipping around on hogs go with a shotgun or lever action. A .35 is a nice cal to hunt with. I wouldn't use any .22 cal unless I was huntng varmints,my son killed 3 deer with a .243 single shot and now I have him rigged up with a 30-30.
