Hog Hunter Shot at Green Swamp West
William Chester Wedemeier of St. Petersburg was shot by a fellow hog hunter Saturday morning at the Green Swamp West Wildlife Management Area near Dade City.
Wedemeir was taken by ambulance to Lakeland Regional with serious injuries, but was expected to survive, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report.
Wedemeier, 51, was separated from the group in thick vegetation when he came across a pack of hogs. After shooting and killing one, he was kneeling over, dressing the hog, when he was shot from behind by Stein Eric Berg, 48, of Hudson.
The FWC said Berg mistook Wedemeier for wild game and fired a single shot, likely with a rifle although the news release didn't indicate a weapon.
Berg called 911 and helped Wedemeier until help arrived.
The FWC said none of the hunters were wearing hunter safety orange, but said it's not required by law for hog hunting.
