My wife drives a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl 4.0 L, over 100k in miles. We have had 2 instances within the last week where she is driving down the road and the engine just shuts off. My 1st thought was fuel pump. But it appears to be electrical because the engine will start back up and she can drive off. Yesterday it shut off on her again while doing 45 mph and she was stranded in a medium, it would not automatically restart, luckily an undercover showed up, called in a tow truck and got her towed home for free. I got home and checked all of the fuses, battery connection, grounds, etc. The truck started right back up with no issue.
I have been doing some online research, jeep forums, auto sites and have found that these issues, 8 out of 10 times, relate to a Crank Position Sensor CPS. Have any of you swapped one of these out before? It looks to be a pain in the arse. I seen where one guy was using about 3 ft of wrench extension and another actually went through the floorboard under the gas pedal. Is there anything else you could think of that would cause the same issues?
Now here is the weird thing. Last week I put in a new fan relay switch and harness. The relay had one really bad prong and the harness had one plug that looked like it suffered a bad arc, the plastic actually was melted around the opening. Last night after I got it restarted I let it run for a little while. I had my wife start the AC, even put the car in drive and had her hold the brake on. As soon the car got to the temp the fan would usually kick on, the engine died again. I started thinking about the last 2 times it died while she was driving and both times she had only gotten far enough away from home to get the engine up to operating temperatures. Could these issues be related or do you think it is just an issue of "thermal failure" of the CPS. Any help or personal experience is appreciated.
WHEN IS THE LAST TIME THE FUEL FILTER BEEN CHANGE? IS IT CUTING OF BECAUSE A LACK OF FUEL?

There is no sputtering, spitting or hesitation at all, one second the engine is running the next its completely shut off. Its like someone pulled off all 6 spark plugs at once.
Are you getting a check engine light? Go to autozone or whatever you have nearby and see if they can pull the codes. If it's a sensor it should be setting a code that will tell you which one is bad.

Apparently the ECM in these can go bad and its a common thing, ex-girl of mine was having the same issue in hers
