A nelly is what happens when a person seeking to fit into a particular social group (gangster) feels his birth name ( Cornell Iral Haynes ) isn't quite gangster enough to be "cool". Even though Cornell probably grew up in a decent neighborhood, he feels the need to be from the "hood" with his other brothas. First step to being gangster is to change your non gangster name to something crappier.
Another instance would be Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., or as you may know him "lil Wayne."
I've always liked rock and metal better than country anyway, but it is going downhill at a faster rate. The taylor swift generation has taken country over.
Rock is the same. Look how its changed. I was a metal head redneck in HS, but quit listening to rock when Nirvana came out. Still some good stuff but most of it is trash too. I pretty much listen to classic rock, sports talk, or news all day.
