LUTZ - Instead of packing up for summer camp, a group of Bay Area Boy Scouts is working with local authorities to find their stolen equipment.
It's hard to miss at first glance, a trailer covered on all sides with the words "Boy Scout Troop 339" and a large green gator holding a stick, but the camping trailer hasn't been seen in days. It is believed to have been stolen from the Christ Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Troop community chair Mike Jacobi said he was in complete shock upon learning about the theft.
"In six weeks we go to summer camp and we need the trailer to transport the patrol boxes and everything up for the scouts," Jacobi said.
The scouts noticed that the trailer was gone during their Tuesday night meeting.
"Our tents, anything we need is in there for summer camp," said Jacobi. "It's just devastating."
The trailer is valued at $3,000 and the gear inside is worth nearly $14,000. The worst part of the theft is that the 50 boys in the troop now have nothing to take to camp.
Mike says, "They're not very happy," Jacobi said about the scouts, "but we're trying to keep it low for the boys so they don't get too upset."
The troop is now working with the Sheriff's office with hope to retrieve anything.
"We just hope that somebody out there maybe has seen the trailer," said Jacobi.
This is now the second time thieves have stolen camping gear from a local Boy Scout troop. Last month, Troop 357 had about $6,000 in gear taken.
"We still have to figure out," said Jacobi. "This is the second trailer in six weeks in this area, the other one in Pinellas, and we have no idea who would be so mean."
Troop leaders say the boys will go camping in Georgia but it may just take a little extra hard work on their part.
"We have to do a fundraiser," Jacobi said of their plans. "We have to hope that people help us and contribute a little bit of money."
The troop plans to leave for camp in six weeks on their first out-of-state camping trip in several years.
Anyone with information about the stolen trailer is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

that sucks. my cousins oldest son has become an eagle scout and his ceremony is next month. some of these kids put in a TON of hard work and dedication to be a part of this organization. i know my cousin spent a TON of time with his son and his sons troop. im sure the community will step up and help them out. that is really a shame. im with you and hope whoever did this gets caught and penalized to the fullest extent and then while in prison, bad things happen to them.
been in scouting since i was 5.. made to life scout.. then was a scoutmaster for 4 years.. its a shame.
Didn't this happen a few months back too, or is this the same theft?
I hate a thief. Only good thief is a :hang thief.
