The carb has been screwed up on my ATV. I know what its from- lack of use as it stays at my hunt camp in the shed...and ethanol.
I brought it home from up there last time I was up to get it fixed. Asked several people to help me out with it and offered to pay. Seems noone wanted a couple dollars spending money. I admit I am not proficient in taking that kind of crap apart and putting it back together
Last time I used it was August last year. My mom got sick in September and it just sat and sat and sat.
In March I tried to crank it. I poured gas in it and the gas ran right out the overflow line out of the carburetor. Everyone I mentioned it to said "float is stuck open". Great. Once again, couldn't find anyone to help me out
So yesterday afternoon a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in a while pulls up and asks why my ATV is sitting on the trailer. Told him carb was messed up and I didn't feel comfortable tearing it apart. He told me to get some tools and some beer.
He/we took carb off and cleaned all the little parts with carb cleaner and a wire brush. Ran a bristle from wire brush thru jets(man those holes are small) and put everything back together.
Unfortunately it was getting late and I only had about 2 cups of gas left in my gas can. Also the battery was dead. Like really dead as its the original battery. It wouldn't charge enough to turn engine over
So we left it at that and had some beers and told hunting lies. This morning I went and got some fresh gas and a new battery. Nice to know they are more expensive than a car battery
Put gas and battery in it and it fired right up.
Here is the issue. As soon as I let off the throttle, the engine shuts off. I have to give it about 1/4"-1/2" of throttle to crank it. Soon as I let it go it shuts off immediately. It is a manual shift ATV. If I let off throttle too long when shifting, it shuts off. It is obviously not getting proper fuel when the throttle is at idle position.Absolutely will not sit ad idle at all. Is there an exterior adjustment to fix this? I watched him take the carb apart and remember there was a little screw inside the carb that had to be backed off like three turns from fully tight. Is that the problem? Here is a couple pics of the carb
When its running, it seems to be ok, but is a little rough.
Carbs are very hard to get clean, soaking in carb dip and then blowing out with an air compressor works pretty good. Sometimes you are money ahead just to get a new carb. Last carb I had problems cleaning was a honda pressure washer and it was only $18 shipped for a new one.
HH thanks so much. I have a honda motor pressure washer with an ethanol carb and have been afraid to tackle it, thought a new carb would cost a fortune. I would want to replace any part that ethanol touched. now I only use non ethanol gas+ stabil in any gas motor tools and have had no issues. where did you get the new carb?
Sounds like one of the jets may still be clogged.
I replaced my water pump on my 4 wheeler yesterday evening and now I have to take my carb off because it sat too long. Hopefully I can just clean it out and fire it up.
If you can get to the screw, start there. If not, are you sure he put all of the jets back in their correct spot?
You may want to check ebay for an aftermarket carb. I was looking on there and saw carbs for around 150 for my brand. OEM was 450+. If you do go that route drain the gas tank and go to the racing shop just down the road from the Archery shop on Florida. They sell ethanol free gas and use that strictly for the 4 wheeler.
sounds like the idle jet is not working, does it have a exsternal srew to adjust? If not you mite have to take it back off and blow it out with air. I use stabil on every tank full and it works, 4 years with no trouble.
