Also any advice on them? What companies to look for/stay away from? We are going to get one here at home soon....
I bought a 4 cam system but haven't had time to hook it up yet. Once setup I will be able to monitor it where I have cell phone or internet. I can add 4 more cams if I need.
Allen cordless systems! You can even view from phone! Cheap and work!

I have a Samsung SDE-5001 setup, I have 6 cameras setup now. 4 at each corner of house, one in garage and one in house.
Had to replace 1 camera connector because of corrosion. 1 camera that just flat out died and 1 dvr that might have been my fault.
I did buy refurbished instead of new first. would have gone all new (better warranty) if I did it all over again.
I love it when it was working perfectly, but pain in the ass when it breaks....
I recommend a CCTV/DVR setup, hide the DVR unit as best as possible. Do be careful with wireless setups, they are easily hacked/accessed.
Costco has a few nice systems, this is one i'd get if my samsung goes shit again: http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-Full-960H-Security-System-with-1TB-HDD-and-8-700TVL-Cameras.product.100070208.html
Lorex, Swann, Q-See are all decent entry level systems..
I got one that i can view in real time from my cell phone.
