the 22 and 27 pair well together if you want to carry 2 guns. the 27 is the smallest of the 40 cals but your pinky is hanging in space, more of a problem for those with larger hands. they make an extended mag that solves that and is supposed to hold 12, but only holds 11 and with wear the bottom of the mag can slide off. the mdl 23 is the middle of the road with 13 capacity and may be a better choice for you. recoil with the 40 is fast and snappy. the 9mm ammo has improved alot so you may want to go there and get a thinner profile and higher mag capacity. they are reasonably priced imo for what you get, set the standard (along with sig) for durability/reliability, tend to be a little thicker than say kahr but have higher mag capacity and better than expected accuracy from a kind of funky trigger thats not hard to get used to. the kahrs are nice for smaller hands and better concealability but with a single stack mag you get less capacity.kahr makes all steel versions for 4-6 extra ounces. sigs are good in all aspects, all metal but more pricey. a lot of other brands (xd's) etc, but prefer the types you just draw point and squeeze (no safeties).
