I'll admit computerized cnc machining can cut pieces to more exacting tolerances today, on a diff quality steel. and just where was that steel made then vs now? today they will cut any corner possible to save money. for example using plastic instead of steel wherever possible. do they care it's gonna wear out quicker? decide for yourself. and even those expensive automated tools work differently when new and when older and parts are just about to be replaced. but I would agree the product"MAY" be more consistent today, but not necesarily better. sure there were lemons then and now. but then quality control, stricter inspection, morals and mfg pride wouldn't let something of inferior quality with their name on it leave the factory, today is another story. now about wood, look at examples of wood stocks over decades from 1900-2000 and honestly tell me you can't see a decrease in quality. nowaday people are brainwashed into thinking WOOD-BAD, which is so far from the truth. aside from adding wt,warmth, charecter and good looks a wood stock will generaly absorb more felt recoil than plastic. and when I say plastic I'm talking of the hollow injection molded true plastic stocks NOT hand layed up fiberglass/kevlar polymers or wood laminate (which I think are great). wood stocks have been around as long as guns and if abused, used rough or dropped can crack. the warping and shooting 3" off if the humidity goes up 3 degrees is pretty much bunk unless you are a world class long distance shooter. plus today there are oils, finishes and epoxies than can make wood stocks strong and weatherproof and still keep the look, feel and function. look it's your money and your gun, just trying to save newbies the mistakes most of our senior members have made of buying crap 3 or 4 times before breaking down and buying something of quality and being very pleased with it. theres few things worth than carrying a gun around you hate and saying "I wish I shopped a little longer/harder or spent more". a perfect example are my zeiss binocs. in 1996 they were a buttload of $, but today every time I look thru them, I say wow! and have never once regretted paying "TOO" much. I've regretted not paying enough many times.
Gentlemen,
I have to agree to disagree with some of you and lets leave it at that.
However, this has been a very lively and enjoyable discussion which has me thinking... which is never a bad thing.
I guess we are truly are products of our past. I've been involved in consumer product field for many years and even ran a manufacturing plant so I guess I look at consumer products in slightly different light than others. Not that my view is any better or more accurate but just different.
Good lookin rig
Nice SPS. How much? Keep some oil on that barrel and action, the finish isn't the greatest in the world and the RUST very easily...
