What is the difference between long action and short action in model 700? Was going to order DNZ mounts (new scope on way) but there is a long and short action to choose from.
Not exactly sure which model I have, I can go take a pic if needed
Iluv2hunt, The long and short action can be understood by comparing a 30-06 round and a 308 round. The '06 is a long action in the Rem. 700 and the 308 will be a short action, and that will dictate the length of scope bases. This holds true with the commercial rifles, I think the military 700's are called a model 24 and they may be all long actions? Trying to recall what I have read and I'm an old man, so you better wait on an expert for the final word. Treefarmer

It's a 243 if it matters
I answered my own question
All remington model 700 actions are based on the length of 2 cartridges. The short action is based on cartridges of 2.800in.or less in length.Examples include the .308win,.243win,22-250,.223 rem.etc. The long action length is based on cartridge,s of 3.340in.length.Examples include the 30-06,270win,300win mag, etc.
