Got a good deal on a sweet little .22 rifle yesterday. It's a Remington 552 with a Tasco 3-9x32 scope. Probably about 25-30 years old, guy can't remember when his grandfather said he bought it, and I haven't checked ser # yet.
Was going out to Knights Trail anyway to sight in my .243 and tryout my Browning Lite 12 with slugs, and stopped and picked up the Remington on the way. Shot 75 rounds through it, and it's a nice shooting little rifle. Took three 5 shot groups to get it zeroed in for me at 50 yards, it was shooting 4 inches high and 3 inches right. I think it's still shooting about 1/2" high but that's ok for now.
Meant to stop and get some .243 ammo, but in the excitement of getting the new rifle I forgot to do so, and got to the range with just 8 rounds in my ammo box. It was enough to get it hitting the bullseye, but I would have liked another half dozen shots. I also think I need to get a new scope. The rifle is a hand-me-down from my dad, a Winchester Model 70, and it's got an older Tasco 3-12x40. It's set up for the way my dad likes to shoot, which puts your cheek almost resting on your trigger hand. I can use it "as is" since I've managed to kill a few deer with it over the years, but I'd really like to get it to where it comes up naturally into position and I don't have to work and wiggle to get a full view.
The Lite 12 was great! Shot a few loads of 00 thru her first, and each time I saw the dirt right behind the target explode in a big dust cloud. Changed over to rifled slugs, and from 50 yards there was no problem seeing the hole left by those suckers! These were Remington Max Load 2 3/4 slugs, and they pack a good kick. The Lite 12 has a lite trigger as well, but it was nice to shoot. It has the rifle sights and I was putting the slugs where I was aiming. I may have to put a red dot or scope on it and see how I like it. Will try the 100 yard range next time!
So I have to pick up some .243 this week, and between that and the Browning I'm sure I'll be ready to kill a pig this weekend with trapper dan and the other fellas going with us!

Those 552's are a sweet gun. I have one that was my dads. I ALMOST screwed up and sold it a few years ago, because I never shot it
I looked on Gunbroker to see what to price ask, and my jaw dropped when I saw the selling prices.
It immediately got a thorough cleaning, new mounts, and glass...and some long overdue range time. I absolutely love that gun now
