on paper there are cartiges that will better the 06, ex the 270wsm. but with handloading a lighter bullet the 06 will come pretty damn close. but the 06 has been getting it done incredibly well for 108 years. after 100 yrs I doubt anyone will remember what a short mag is and the 06 will still be going strong.

Whatever, you have done well with will be your favorite.
I shot a Ruger 77 25-06 for years and loved it. About 5 years back I bought a Remington Model 7 in 308. I have killed 10 or 12 deer with it, all one shot kills and nothing went more than 75 yards. I am still on the first box of ammo. I wouldn't trade it for anything now.
