My aunt has an old h&r top break chambered in 38 s+w, while her father was still alive uncle dave decided to file down the hammer/firing pin as he was afraid his father was suicidal. It is blue with a 5 shot cylinder. it does not say what model it is. I am in search of a new hammer/firing pin to get this gun working again. Any help as usual would be greatly appreciated.
I would think twice about shooting that revolver.
The top break design isn't the strongest in the world and those revolvers had a lot of poor quality interparts. Finally, have you seen the price of 38 S&W ammo lately?
my dad has my grandfathers old s&w top break .38. it shoots fine. not loose or anything. not scary to shoot. they made the top break for a very long time. those .38's are soooo slow. neat gun. i have his old colt police positive which shoots good also, rarely does it get fired.
The gun is in great condition, very tight, with very little use. She would like the gun in working condition as self defense in her home as a last resort. She has plenty of ammo.
cost of ammo and repairs, if you can find parts that old. it might be cheaper to buy another. if it's a sentimental thing hang it on the wall as art. my 0.02
