I visited local walmart and they were selling Weatherby vanguard, only chambered with .30-06, selling for 350 dollars.
The rifle has Tan and black dotted stock and non stainless steel barrel.
I hunt occassionally for wild pigs and rarely deers out here in FL. Do you think this would be worth it?
I shot some .308 before but never fired .30-06 in my entire life...
Or should I wait until the new Weatherby Vanguard S2 to come out? I think I will be able to afford next rifle when I come back from basic training. Maybe I buy this rifle with .308 when it comes out
So what do you think? Should I go for it or not?
Thank you very much
30-06 is IMHO the perfect all around rifle. After a shotgun, if I could only have 1 rifle it'd be an 06.
The ammunition is readily available, comes in probably a dozen sizes, and will put a decent hoke in anything it hits.
You can hunt deer and pig, take looooong shots at yotes, and then go out west and bag an elk.
I have no experience with that brand so maybe someone else can offer some insight.
imo, both are excelent rounds and will work well in fla. if you favor a light/handy gun a 308 is a short action and better suited for a short barrel like 18-20" in an ultralight bolt action at 5 1/2- 6 1/2 lbs with a low powered variable scope, that will be easier to carry all day in the heat and brush and good for close/fast shots. if you have longer shots and more open areas or want to go out west someday a full size gun with 24" bbl and say 3x9x50 or 2x10x50 will be easier to shoot more accurately further, if you don't mind carrying an extra 2 1/2 lbs around. but God forbid I could only have one it would be a full size 30-06. the gun I rely on most after the shotgun is a rem mdl 7 18" bbl 7mm08 and have never been undergunned (in the east)
The weatherby vanguard is actually not a bad gun. I know several people that have them and no complaints
