jmo but going from never owning a hangun to carrying concealed is skipping a few steps.

I chose .40 cal because I like the fact that they're between 9mm and .45 ACP

This is just my opinion, and it may mean nothing, but 9mm is a lot less expensive, and good quality self defense ammo will have the stopping power of .40.
99.9% of the ammo you use will be fmj. If you are going to be carrying, I suggest lots of training and range time. I go through about 200 rounds a month. The savings of 9mm vs. what I would have spent on .40 allowed me to buy two more guns over a couple of years.

Glock is a well made and extremely reliable gun. However, I haven't heard good things about GEN 4. I personally prefer Springfield XD.
Go to a gun shop and get a feel for a bunch of guns.. Ergonomics is a big deal to me.
Pick out about two or three guns.
Then find a range that rents guns so you can test them out.

just make sure it's black plastic, has no re-sale value in 25 years and hold it sideways when shooting,lol.
