I guess you're using a patched roundball load?
Look at what diameter roundball you are using. That will tell you what thickness patch you need.
Assuming your bbl is a .50....and you are using a .490 ball...then you might start at .010 patch. If you can load it safely, a .015 would work but it naturally will be very tight. You'd need a GOOD lube. Or you could try a smaller ball and thicker patch.
One thing to remember is that bbl's are not necessarily going to be a true .50...you might want to check it and see. You might actually have .51 or a .49 and they would still call it a .50....but it would change what your ball/patch combo would need to be.
Also, I've found that you can easily make your own lubed patches that work way better than the pre-lubed ones. There's lots of recipes on the internet for them.
I have some pre-lubed ones I use at the range simply for the convienence of them but I don't use super tight PRB combos either...
yes using patched ball, and yes I think the ball is .490 which now makes sense that you need a .010 patch for .50 cal barrel.

I will be using the patched ball for breaking in and sighting the barrel.
and just before deer season I am switching to the hornady sabotted round, will sight it in, and hope I get lucky 🙂
Can you just use spit in between rounds to clean the barrel? Keep a patch in your mouth between shots.

Yes. And you can also lube patches with it. Lots of guys use spit lubed patches.
