Well i took my first shot at re-blueing a barrel. And i can say it came out perfect. I thought it was gonna be hard but actually if you follow directions exactly as it says you will be fine..
I bought this kit from a local store. It cost me 24.95 and it came with also (not shown in the picture) all the stuff to re do a wooden stock!
First i used the de greaser that came in the kit. It took any oil off and so on.
Then i used the blue and rust remover. Trust me this thing works. I put it on and you see the old blueing coming right off. I also had a maroon 3m scotchbright pad and worked it in until the whole barrel was silver. And also the scotchbright pad took out the 3 main rust spots that i had.
After i cleaned it again with the cleaner.
Then i applied the blueing. Now this is tricky. What i did was stood the barrel up buisness side facing down and took a soaked rag and ran it up and down the barrel to put en even coat on it. (The best way to get a perfect even coat is to soak it in the blueing solution.) I didnt have enough so i just applicated it on.
Some advice. TAKE THE BARREL OFF> dont try taping off parts cause it will not work. I ended up reblueing the whole gun because i got the action partially stripped on mistake (had some on my palm and got it on the action).
My model 70 had a barrel that is screwed in and i could not get it off with out special tools so i had to reblue the whole rifle.
Im so confident i am going to reblue my ruger 10/22 and my sons .22 marlin. I swear my 270 looks like it just came off the shelf at a store.. BRAND NEW LOOKING!! next i have to do the stock!
I'm assuming you took the scope, mounts and rings off before you did it? Also on the model 70's, there is one screw in the bottom of the stock that lets you take the barrel off the stock
Mine is screwed threaded into the action. Yes took the scope, stock, rings, and bolt out before starting.
How long did it take for you to strip it and re-blue it?
I paid a smith in bev hills to remove the iron sights and put a matte black finish on a rifled slug barrel. it looked good at first but I guess the real test is just how hard the finish cures to, cuz 3 yrs later it scratches real easy and have to watch for rust spots. but I sure don't baby it thats for sure.
