Yes the 6.8 will work on a 223/556 lower, the 6.8 will need its own BCG and mags though, they are specific to that upper/round.

You need the 6.8 bolt...the bolt carrier & parts are common to the 223 - 6.8
The flash suppressors on most 6.8 barrels are .308 sized 5/8X24
