One shot, one kill is great in the movies, but in th real world the enemy can come back in three-six months to pick-up dead bodies. A wounded enemy soldier/combatant requires 6-8 others to evacuate, care, transport, feed, and look after them once wounded. You cause the enemy more problems and difficulties on the battlefield when you seriously wound/hurt someone than you do when you kill them dead. That's the primary reason we have and use the 5.56/.223 cal (Small 22 caliber bullet) instead of the .308 cal or even the .30-06 cal from WWII. Not very many wounded soldiers, when hit by a .30-06 cal. The Europeans used to carry the 7.62x54R (Large 30 caliber bullet) which is nearly the size of a .30-06 cal, now they almost exclusively carry the AK or similiar weapon chambered in Nato 7.62x39 (Small 30 caliber bullet) which is a tad bit larger than the 5.56 but has no where near the stopping/killing power of the .30-06 cal or 7.62x54R....
What you just said there was the general principle behind this post. like I said, I am knowledgeable on hunting guns and hunting bullets, I am quite stupid when it comes to this military stuff. I don't want him to go out there and gimp up my deer & hogs, and me have to spend hour blood trailing because he penciled a small bullet thru a deer or hog. Trust me, we will be having a bullet selection discussion before he goes in the woods with that gun. I really would feel more comfortable if he just hunted with my 30-30
Good discussion :usa3
I agree that all good Americans should have the right to keep and bear arms butreally, have you seen some of the azz clowns in the woods?I think for way to many it is a macho thing and not a sporting thing. Sorry to derail this fine thread, just my 2 cents.
Like the Famous Wise and Supreme Nacho said, it's all about the bullet chief..... With the right bullet that 6.8 would perform just as well as any .22 - .30 caliber bullet... Wrong bullet and it will shoot like a .223 with a solid tip, in and out where you can stick a pencil through the hole..
Yep, alot of azz clowns out there, and thank god they are spending $1,500.00 on a $700.00 AR platforms and putting $800.00 scopes on them. Alot of that money goes back to supporting our rights.
Next time you encounter one of the azz clowns in the woods after the hunt, pull them off to the side and mentor them into becoming a real hunter. The AR platforms make great home defense guns, long distance tree rat rifles, crow guns, up north they make great woodchuck guns, they do a number on Armadillos, Racoons hate em, ect. Take the time, make a friend, and mentor them into an outdoorsman, not a weekend warrior. Who knows maybe you'd get interested in an AR for plinking and they'd start hunting with a Ruger 77 in .06.... Never know chief...
I usually encounter them walking up and down roads, not usually in the woods. They're kinda scary to me.Please don't get me wrong, I have absolutely no problem owning one or shooting one. But a lot of guys are stepping off into the hunting world from watching t.v. shows and not being taught by a father or grandfather. My advice to any new hunter is learn from an experienced friend or relative, take their advice on which rifles are best, not just because you think they look cool. As far as the NRA goes I was a long time member but now consider them just another lobby group always hounding me for money. You know they endorsed Harry Reid? I have always voted for those who support gun rights and always will, but am getting away from the main stream Rep. party and voting on Tea PArty types.
good points on the black rifles. I always used to think that if it wasn't best suited for hunting I didn't want anything to do with owning an "assault rifle or people pistols", but society has changed and post katrina in N.O. opened my eyes that someday you may need to defend your home or person from multiple assailants and had a custom ( Jim Fuller) ak47 made and it was a blast and very accurate to the distances I needed 50 yds, and I could pick up brass/steel casings with a magnet on a stick which appealed to my fat lazy azz. the ak platform is incredibly simple to learn/run and become proficient with as well as the role model for reliability/simplicity and innexpensive to make.
