I still don't get the need for these oddball military rigs for hunting,it's way to easy to be normal.
all that mumbo-jumbo tells us nothing we really need to know. caliber/diameter wise it is more than ample, allot bigger than a 243 and a tad smaller than 7mm. the wt, construction of the bullet, and velocity is what is going to kill the animal. I would assume/hope the bullet he selects for hunting is somewhere between 100-130 gr ( give or take a little ) and veloccity guestimating 2600-2800fps that should easily generate the rule of thumb of 1'000 foot/pounds of energy at contact with animal, out to at least 200 yds, probly more. bullet selection is the big question and critically important for a good swift kill ( who and how it's made ). I've been saying for years the military should neck down the 308 to 25 caliber, a 25-08 if you will with 100 gr bullet at app 2800 fps and the troops would never have to hit someone twice ( depending on placement). I wouldn't take it bear or elk hunting but for fla it should be fine.
I agree on one side and disagree at the same time with your statement.
First thing, it has nothing to do with "need". You only need one weapon for hunting. A 12 Gauge Pump shotgun with appropriate accessories and appropriate ammunition for the type game and you can kill anything that walks, flys, runs, or swims in North America. Hunters in Australia can fill you in on "need"!
Using your logic we might as well all go turn in all our weapons at the sheriffs department in the morning since we don't "need" them.
Now I agree with you in general termas since a standard caliber round works just fine for hunting and probably better in most cases. Get you a .243, .270, .308, or .30-06 and you are all set for hunting.
I disagree since we still have the right to shoot and hunt with whatever caliber or type firearm we wish, as long as it's not an automatic weapon or over .50 caliber. We should all THANK GOD that the paramilitary and "black guns" have become so popular with todays youth and modern hunter/shooter. If it wasn't for these type weapons and accessories in todays market, most all of the gun manufactures would be OUT OF BUSINESS and our rights probably wouldn't be what they still are today. It has to do with money, contributions, donations, and sales of products to make contributions and donations for our lobby of the "Right to Bear Arms", the NRA.
At the NRA convention this year in Charlotte, NC we asked the question about Paramilitary and Black Guns and most all of the gun manufacturers we asked gave a similiar answer. The answer was that in some way, shape, or form they were involved, make and/or distribute some sort of product(s), accessory(s), light(s), sight(s), scope(s), Laser(s), gun(s), gear, or something related to the "Paramilitary/Black Gun" market. Remington owns DPMS, Bushmaster and EOtech. If it wasn't for this market, the gun manufacturers couldn't afford to do business solely on Hunting and Sport Shooting weapons alone.
Money would dry up from sales, then the contributions and donations would slow down, and our lobby (the NRA) would surely feel it. We would be the next ones to feel it once they appointed another anti-gun chief justice in the supreme court. Our lobby (the NRA) has alot of influence with our elected officials in the house and senate, who sit up in DC on our behest. If we didn't have this lobby, we'd pay hell making sure a Pro-Gun chief justice was appointed next time around.
So no I don't think an AR-15 platform is the best platform for shooting deer or hogs, but if it keeps my right to Bear Arms securely in place because it's popular to own them and money flows to support our lobby (the NRA) you bet I'd take one hog huntin....
Moral of the story, send the NRA your $25.00 a year and hope they are able to keep out rights intact for the next 200 years.
There's Nacho, just in time....
One shot, one kill is great in the movies, but in th real world the enemy can come back in three-six months to pick-up dead bodies. A wounded enemy soldier/combatant requires 6-8 others to evacuate, care, transport, feed, and look after them once wounded. You cause the enemy more problems and difficulties on the battlefield when you seriously wound/hurt someone than you do when you kill them dead. That's the primary reason we have and use the 5.56/.223 cal (Small 22 caliber bullet) instead of the .308 cal or even the .30-06 cal from WWII. Not very many wounded soldiers, when hit by a .30-06 cal. The Europeans used to carry the 7.62x54R (Large 30 caliber bullet) which is nearly the size of a .30-06 cal, now they almost exclusively carry the AK or similiar weapon chambered in Nato 7.62x39 (Small 30 caliber bullet) which is a tad bit larger than the 5.56 but has no where near the stopping/killing power of the .30-06 cal or 7.62x54R....

This 6.8 is pretty close to your "25-08" idea. The article I quoted shows ballistics very close to a .308, and that round has been more than proven as both a hunting ans sniper round. The author took a 6.8 handload out elk/mule deer hunting and killed a 200lb muley from 75 yards, knocked it for a loop, dead when it hit the ground.
