Yes... Its the heated debate. Me, I am just trying to make a decision. Right now, the gap in my collection is for the longer range stuff. My shotgun and 30-30 handle most stuff for up to about 120 or so, maybe a bit further. I have always wanted a .270. Maybe its the stories of Jack Oconner. I don't know.

What I know so far is that a 270 has a flatter trajectory than a 30-06 and on average less recoil. I also know that 30-06 has more choices from ammo and loads though. I don't see me going on a safari anytime soon so I won't be looking to put down any Water Buffalo. 🙂 While not in a hurry, I want to make a decision to start watching out for a good used one when my budget allows.

What's the general consensus out there about the .270 verses the 30-06 and why? Keep in mind, for my use, 90% of all my hunting will always be in Florida, with only an occasional trip up north for deer. (I am keeping elk in my bucket list though. 🙂 )

The ballistics are so close on the 2, you can shake them up in a bag and pick one out and be fine.

Either one will will probably outperform most shooters ability

If I had to pick, it would be the -06

Also don't let recoil be the deciding factor. The recoil is only a pound difference in the 2 guns with a n 8# rifle
That can be eliminated with a good recoil pad

both are so close. if I didn't handload I'd go with the 06 for greater bullet wt selection in storebought ammo. if buying a used gun I'd go with whichever gun was better quality or cheaper price. you won't go wrong with either one. both use 06 brass and the bullet diam is only 23/1000's of an inch different, .277" vs .300". or if you really want to open a can of worms consider 7mm08 vs 308, both short action cartridges that will also get the job done in a smaller lighter platform.

I think I said this before. My guide in Montana(elk) would not allow anything smaller than a 06. No short mags. either. I did take my elk in N.M. with the 06. I f u feel u r not going to complete ur bucket list-270 is a nice shootin' rifle. I just sold ,6 mos. ago, my 300 mag. do not need the punishment but it was a nice shooter. if the 06 will do the job, which it did-1 shot-than that is my all around rifle.
